GM Hopeful For Grant Funds to be Awarded Soon
A wildfire mitigation plan grant of approximately $42,000 is in
the final stages of completion of being awarded to NORA Electric Cooperative. Funds received from this grant will enable the cooperative to begin tree trimming,
vegetation clearing, and other wildfire preventive maintenance measures across the entire service
area. In 2026, the New Mexico Public Regulation Commission is expected to require all of its rural
cooperatives to have plans in place for wildfire mitigation. It is expected that this grant will cover
100% of what is needed to be completed within the PRC plan.
There is also a grant from the state of New Mexico pending in the amount of around
$950,000 to be used for a comprehensive mapping and inventory of all system assets. Once the
grant is issued, NORA expects to begin this project in December and complete by June of 2026.
In addition to the previous two grants, is a third pending grant with the DOE for close to
$9 million. Funds from this grant would be used to pay for the completion of the second
phase of transmission from the Coyote junction into the Canjilon area. If awarded, this
would be a matching grant, meaning DOE would provide $4.5 million, and NORA would
be responsible for $4.5 million as well.
