Deposits

Deposit or guarantee may not be required for new customers with good credit. Circumstances that may require a deposit are (410.16).

  1. customers who have not had service with that utility and who have not established an acceptable credit rating,
  2. chronically delinquent customers of the utility,
  3. as a condition for reconnection of service following shut off of service, and
  4. if a customer has interfered with or diverted the service of a utility that is on a customer's premises. (410.16(d))

("Chronically delinquent" status is defined as a bill not paid by the time a second bill has been sent on 3 or more occasions in a 12-month period.) (410.9(c))

AMOUNT OF DEPOSIT

A deposit should be no more than 1/6 of your probable yearly use or 1½ times your largest monthly use. This money will be returned to you, with interest, after one year if your bills are paid on time.

Failure to pay your bill on time on three or more occasions in a 12-month period or having your service shut off due to nonpayment of your bill are grounds for increasing the deposit or for holding the deposit until you have a good credit standing with the utility for 12 consecutive months. (410.18 a-d)

MEDICAL CERTIFICATES

If a customer whose service has been disconnected or who has been notified that their service will be shut off presents a company-provided medical certificate signed by a certified practitioner of the healing arts and indicates that health is in jeopardy if the utility is shut off, service will not be shut off or will be restored within 12 hours.   Blank copies of medical certificates can be obtained from the utility .

The medical certificate can delay shut off of service for a specified period of time. The utility can, depending on the circumstances, extend the certificate. The utility may require new certificates at their discretion. (410.31(a)(5 & 6))

LIFE SUPPORT SYSTEMS

Your service will not be shut off if you have a serious illness and you let the utility know about it. Contact an authorized customer service representative for more information. (410.31(b))

Please let the utility know about life support equipment in your home (kidney machine, respirator, iron lung) or a diabetic who keeps insulin refrigerated, or other conditions that might become life threatening if service is terminated.  If service is temporarily interrupted by unforeseen circumstances it can be restored as soon as possible.
